Halloween Shenanigans

Halloween is almost here. With Halloween comes: costumes, trick or treating, Jack O'Lanterns, and parties. Halloween can be exciting. For some, it means having a wild good time and getting into a little bit of trouble. Even though it's Halloween, here are a couple of tips so you don't get yourself in any hot water this Halloween.

Wear Appropriate Costumes

Work is just that, a place to work. It's a professional atmosphere. Don't wear anything offensive, grotesque, or may cause a workplace dispute. I know those Trump and Hillary costumes are tempting this year but work probably isn't the best place to dawn the Don.

One more tip, if "sexy" is anywhere in the title of your costume, think twice before wearing it to work. I recently read an article about a woman who lost a sexual harassment suit because the jury didn't believe her story after hearing what she had worn to the company Halloween party over the past several years. Check it out for yourself, here's the article:

Take Off the Mask

Many of us have multiple Halloween parties to get to this season. If you have a few on the same night don't forget to take off the mask before driving or you could end up on the news like the guy in this article:

For your information Minnesota does have a law prohibiting masks in public places. The law is Minn. Stat. 609.735. You could be guilty of a misdemeanor for concealing your identity in a public place through the use of a robe, mask, or other disguise.

Prank or Vandalism?

People have been known to cause mischief by toilet papering or egging someone's house on Halloween. Toilet papering or egging can be considered "Criminal Damage to Property" a.k.a. vandalism. Vandalism can carry harsh penalties. The smallest charge, a misdemeanor, carries a penalty of up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine or both. The biggest charge, a felony, carries a penalty of up to 5 years in jail and a $10,000 fine or both.

In addition to the criminal penalties, you never know what someone might do to "protect" their property. Here's an articles that will make you think twice before attempting to "prank someone":

Happy Halloween! Have fun! Stay safe and party responsibly. If you do have any problems this Halloween season remember, "If you're in a jam call Sam!"
